Swartz Lock Shop is raided by U.S. Treasury agents.

September 29, 1961

The shop is operated by Abe Swartz and located at 364 Massachusetts Avenue. Suspected of being the site for illegal betting, it had been under surveillance for some time that showed more than 1,200 people – including a number of police officers – entering in a single day. As a result of the scandal that follows, Boston police commissioner Leo Sullivan resigns. A network television documentary on the raid is aired in most cities in November 1961.*
